The issue of “green
building” is complex, often confusing and a
fairly new concept for builders. Only in the
last few years have most of us heard this phrase
and all ready it has become a major interest in
the minds of those who are in construction.
Tindall Drywall & Metal Framing is taking a
serious look at how we can help builders succeed
in their green building efforts. We have
established a committee to identify products
that are environmentally friendly and how we can
make changes in our business to become better
stewards of the earth.
At the World Economic Forum
in Davos, Switzerland in 2007 government leaders
united in their resolve to fight climate
changes. It was determined that residential and
commercial buildings are the biggest single
contributor to producing carbon dioxide
emissions. Although it seems a complicated
subject, it isn’t so complex to understand the
impact of ignoring the fact that buildings
account for more than 40% of all global carbon
dioxide emissions, which is one of the main
culprits in the phenomenon of global warming.
What seems a daunting task is better understood
when we realize that taking firm actions to
reduce the environmental impact of buildings can
have a number of beneficial effects:
- Reduce ocean and
river pollution from stormwater runoff.
- Extend the life of municipal
infrastructure by using less water and
contributing less
stormwater, thereby allowing growth without infrastruction
expansion,and
- Extend the life of landfills by reducing
disposal of construction debris and building
materials.
Simply by reducing the
disposal of debris, and manufacturing more with
recycled materials, we can make a huge impact.
The two major suppliers of drywall and drywall
products to Tindall Drywall have made important
commitments to support green building
initiatives.
USG is a founding member of the US Green
Building Council and the Responsible Solutions
to Mold Coalition. Long before environmental
responsibility became a mainstream issue, USG
found innovative ways to reduce and reuse waste;
use water, energy and other resources more
efficiently; and transform manufacturing
byproducts into valuable new resources.

Georgia-Pacific has a long history of
environmental responsibility. They have tracked
their environmental progress and reported these
results publicly for more than 10 years. Many
Georgia-Pacific products can help a builder earn
points toward *LEED® Certification.
